METHONI & SURROUNDINGS
METHONI AND THE CASTLE
If you want to find yourself in a coastal town full of life and history, then your choice should be Methoni. The traditional settlement, the castle, the fortress, the surrounding islets, the picturesque little port, the wonderful beaches, and much more will make you feel like a new person. The castle, built by the Venetians in the early 13th century on a rocky promontory, is among the largest ones in the Mediterranean. At the south edge of the castle a fortified islet floats. Bourtzi, as it is called, a prison and place of executions during the Turkish Occupation, was built in 1500 and is connected to the Sea Gate of the castle with a paved tiny road.

PYLOS
If you want to see a place that’s full of colors and rich in history, then you have to visit the city of Pylos. Only 10 minutes drive from Methoni it’s located on the south entrance of Navarino Bay, below the beautiful fortress of Niokastro. Once you enter the city from its northwest side, you’ll get the big picture: the marina, the port, the small tavernas, the fishing boats, the yachts, and the sailing boats moored in the calm waters that will also calm your mood.

Voidokilia Beach is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, but maybe also in the Mediterranean Sea. Taking the path up from Voidokilia to the Old Navarino castle you will enjoy the wonderful panorama that unfolds in front of you: the Divari lagoon of Gialova, Navarino Bay and the Peloponnesian hills covered with olive trees. From Voidokilia beach you can pass onto the lagoon of Gialova through a natural path to observe the lagoon’s bird life, and the fascinating world of one of Europe’s most important wetlands.

ANCIENT MESSENE
Messene is a significant ancient city in terms of its size, form, and state of preservation, and still has much to offer. It possesses not only sanctuaries and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications, and houses and tombs. It enjoys, amongst other things, the advantage of never having been destroyed or covered by later settlements, and is located on an unspoiled inland site.
